Hole 1

Description:

The starting hole is relatively short, but by no means simple. The shorter you can make your approach shot the better, which requires some risk off the tee. Into the wind with the approach, favor a little long of middle, which will also have you putting back uphill most of the time. Downwind with the approach play up the opening and allow for the ball to run out in trying to get at or just past the middle of the green. While some may see this short hole as an opportunity, none should be disappointed with four.

Hole 2

Description:

One of the wider fairways on the course, the best approach is most often from the middle to left side of the fairway, which leaves an angle to best use the open approach in the front left.  The front one-third of the green slopes strongly from front to middle, so playing a lower shot up the front can allow your ball to roll out to where you will often have a reasonable putt.  If you miss your drive into the rough, especially the right rough, it is best to not get greedy.  This is a dangerous hole, so when out of position it can be best to play for five and hope to make four.

Hole 3

Description:

The first of a great collection of par three holes plays to an iconic Perry Maxwell green with a lot of roll.  Often playing back into the wind, this can be the toughest of the par three holes, where if you miss the green to the opposite side of the flag, par is tough to come by.  Best to try and stay below the flag to have a reasonable putt.  If you have a longer putt over the rolls in the green, putt to leave a good next putt more than trying to make the putt.

Hole 4

Description:

One of Maxwell and Mackenzie’s best par four holes either ever did, this sweeping dogleg left has interesting terrain, a lot of subtle angles, length, playing with a left to right wind off the tee and back into the wind on the approach.  While longer players can try to carry the bunker for a shorter approach, it is important to find the fairway so you can control the approach.  Into the wind a crafty lower shot up the front will often leave your ball in the middle left part of the green, which results in a reasonable putt to most hole locations.

Hole 5

Description:

The first of three par 5's at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club is a stern three shot hole. The fairway bends slightly right, then back to the left. Trees line both sides of the fairway rewarding well placed tee shots and testing stray drives. The green complex sits below the fairway and is hidden by a knoll on the left. A bunker guards the right side making this a very challenging approach.

Hole 6

Description:

This par three will play in a cross wind most of the time, which is a little downwind from the left in a true south wind, and a little into the wind  from the right in a true north wind.  Wind will impact club selection quite a bit, as distance control here is important where staying below the hole is far better than leaving a downhill putt or chip.  This green has a lot in common with the 6th green at Augusta National Mackenzie would design soon after OKCGCC was completed.

Hole 7

Description:

Some will find this to be one of the tougher holes on the course because it has length, often plays back into the wind, the green is well guarded, and certain hole locations can be very hard to get to.  The best drive is typically down the left, where longer players do have to be aware of a creek that emerges as the fairway narrows up.  With the approach, you have to acknowledge that the right side of the green has the tougher hole locations and the right bunker closely guards a small miss.  With left side hole locations, you can use the right to left slope in the green to avoid the left bunker and a drop to the creek left of the green.

Hole 8

Description:

One of the better short par four holes you will find, there are a lot of options off the tee, but the need for precision increases the closer you try to drive the ball to the green.  A tee shot to the lower part of the fairway just short of the fairway bunker will leave the best angle to most hole locations, but a poor view of the green.  Alternatively, playing to the upper part of the fairway can leave a better view, but a poorer angle to all but the back right flags.  Distance control with the approach is very important, noting getting your ball to the back part of the green is better than coming up short.

Hole 9

Description:

One of the toughest driving holes on the course wraps up a stern test in the front nine.  A drive down the right will leave the best angle and view of the green.  From here, shorter players should evaluate the need to try and reach the green, which is surrounded by trouble.  Playing just short is not a bad play.  The green is one of the more benign on the course, fitting this long and tough hole, but there are a lot of subtle slopes you have to watch for with shorter putts.  Back in the times OKCGCC was built, designers like Maxwell and Mackenzie would often design par four and a half holes, meaning it was not quite a par five, but a very difficult par four.  If they did so here, this is that hole.

Hole 10

Description:

Blind tee shots were considered interesting and a way to add variety back in the 1920’s when Maxwell and Mackenzie did OKC, and for those playing the lower tee most will not see their tee shot land.  There are a series of small bumps in the fairway you will want to learn to play over as the best line to play to the fairway, noting you tend to have to aim further left than you think.  Once in the fairway, the approach to this rolling green requires very good distance control, but yet again it is far better to be below the hole than above it.  This green does allow you to use slopes to feed the ball to the flag, especially when the flag is to the left half of the green.

Hole 11

Description:

One challenge here is reading the wind, as it is tough to feel on this tee and it can impact club selection.  Guarded on the right by Maxwell’s hillside bunker, and on the front and left by the creek, it is best to work your ball up the middle of the green, selecting the club that will have you end up on the front half when the hole is cut here, and end up in the back half, even slightly over, when the hole is cut above the slopes in the middle part of the green.  This green will require a deft touch even when you are hole high with a tee shot.

Hole 12

Description:

It has not unusual for Mackenzie, more so than Maxwell, to have a quirky short par four in his designs and this is that hole at OKCGCC.  As much as anything he did it to provide variety.  This hole has multiple options, varying from very conservative to very risky.  The conservative shot is to play to the left just over the creek to the lower part of the fairway, leaving a good angle to most of the green.  You can also choose to play to the upper part of the left fairway for a better look at the green, or just over the creek to the right for a shorter approach shot.  Finally, you can try to drive the green, which brings bunkers, slopes, and the creek into play short, left and long.  Making birdie here requires some taking some risk or precision with the second shot, while playing to the middle of the green typically leaves a reasonable two putt for par.

Hole 13

Description:

This is one of the more unique par five holes you will find, boomeranging from left to right from tee to green.  You can play this hole very conservatively off the tee down the left and short or the fairway bunker, to play a layup down the left, to leave a more challenging shot to the green.  You can play short of the bunker but get more aggressive with a layup closer to the green.  Or you can take on the bunker off the tee and leave a chance to get very close to if not on the green with a second shot.  The more risk you take with the drive and the second can result in a much easier third.  The green has the typical Maxwell roll which requires good distance control, with this green also requiring good directional control to have a makeable putt, or at times a reasonable two putt for par.

Hole 14

Description:

For some players, this is the second of the blind tee shots on the course.  The nature of the approach to the green has a lot to do with how the player should play tee to green.  For some shorter players, the best approach is to take two shots to get within 100 yards of the green, to then pitch on and try to make par, but leave with nothing more than five.  For longer players, driving over the ridge to the lower part of the fairway will leave a short iron or wedge, but not a simple approach where indecision or inaccuracy can lead to five or worse, made more challenging by the fact it is harder to judge the wind from here.  This is one of the smallest greens on the course, with a good bit of roll, and it is well guarded both in the front and the rear, making distance control very important.  The slopes in the green can help feed the ball to the cup with faster green speeds, but for most you simply need to find the green.  While short, this can be very tough.

Hole 15

Description:

Every great course seems to have a really good short par three and this is it at OKCGCC.  The green is not very deep and well guarded on all sides, so as usual distance control is vital, which requires reading the wind in part.  While the green does not have as much roll as others, there are a lot of subtle elements that make it a challenge to match up line and speed with a putt, even from close range.  Being below the hole is not as important here to most hole locations, with choosing the correct club to find the green being a challenge.

Hole 16

Description:

Along with every great course having a short par three, it is not unusual to find a shorter par five near the end of the round too.  The 16th at OKCGCC offers players the ability to get a shot back on the course when downwind, which it is most of the time.  Longer players should be able to reach the green in two, but that is easier when playing up the middle to right side of the fairway where two bunkers almost hide in wait.  For the shorter player, there is less need to take on the bunkers, as a layup from the left side of the fairway is okay, especially given the right to left slopes in the fairway at the layup area.  While a large fairway cut area long of the green seems to be a good place to miss, it leaves a challenge shot to most every hole location.  Better to get spot on with club selection and favor being below the hole.

Hole 17

Description:

No matter if you are playing the right tees or the alternative left tees, the most important part of the tee shot is to find the fairway.  The right fairway bunker will challenge longer drives and those longer players should regularly consider the need to hit driver.  Maxwell and Mackenzie created this green to be one of the most difficult to approach, with angle not being quite as important as good distance control and being aware of where to leave the ball.  To left hole locations, it is best to use slopes in the green to feed the ball to the left, noting that missing the green just left is likely better than ending up on the right side of the green.  To right hole locations, an approach you can stop quickly can lead to a good putt at birdie, but putting from the middle of the green is better than playing from the front bunker.

Hole 18

Description:

A classic finishing hole, the hole has enough length to challenge all players.  Playing up the middle to right side of the fairway often leaves a better lie and it does leave a better view of the green.  This green is designed to accept running shots into the green, where favoring a line just right of the middle of the green helps given a subtle right to left movement in the front two-thirds of the green.  While staying below the hole to cups cut in the front two-thirds is best, don’t risk missing short left in the bunker to accomplish this.  When the cut is cut in the back one-third of the green, you want to focus on getting you ball back there, noting just long of the green is not all bad.  This is another green with a lot of subtle elements to challenge short putts especially..
